AEW: Dynamite Results - January 5 2022

AEW: Dynamite made its TBS bow, in a night fraught with title drama, verbal jabs, and a very nasty looking injury.

All eyes were on the AEW World Title as Hangman Page and Bryan Danielson met for round two, with judges Mark Henry, Paul Wight, and Jerry Lynn ringside if another time limit draw were to occur.

Page was determined to put Danielson away from the ring bell, with Hangman yet to register a win as champ heading into this bout. Danielson was cocky and self assured, playing mind-games with Page in between moves. When Hangman got his hands on Danielson he was a man possessed, knowing a Buckshot Lariat could end it, and hit Danielson with everything in his arsenal. Danielson had an answer for practically everything Page threw at him, and worked over Page’s right arm to minimise the effectiveness of the lariato. Hangman persevered though, still going hard and fast after being busted open from a drop-toehold onto the ringsteps, giving ‘The American Dragon’ a taste of his own medicine, busting Danielson open after ramming his head into the ringpost and delivering a series of headbutts.

Hangman came close after an avalanche moonsault fallaway slam, and destroyed Danielson with a Deadeye on the floor, leading Danielson to drop collapse Omega/Okada style before hangman could land the Buckshot. Danielson was playing possum and locked in the LeBell Lock, but Hangman powered out, landing a moonsault to the outside. This became a desperate back-and-forth affair; Busaiku knee for two from Danielson led to an exchange of headbutts from both men and a nasty Gotch-Style Piledriver from Danielson, again for two. Hangman reversed another Busaiku into a powerbomb, before Danielson locked in a triangle, and then a leglock, but Hangman would not go down, folding Danielson with a Backdrop Driver, and finally nailing the Buckshot to give Danielson his first loss in AEW.

CM Punk played some mind-games with MJF, interrupting his match with ‘The Captain’ Shawn Dean before it began, hitting Dean with a GTS to give MJF a DQ loss, as ‘The Salt of the Earth’ raged at ringside. Punk took the mic, and told MJF this would happen every time he stepped in the ring until he met Punk for a match. MJF and Punk went back-and-forth on the mic, with Punk taking some choice jabs at WWE in the process. MJF then caved and confirmed that Punk will take on… Wardlow next week.

We finally had the finals of the TBS Championship Tournament, as Jade Cargill and Ruby Soho clashed to become the inaugural TBS Champion. Soho entered the match with a banged-up shoulder, and Cargill made sure to target it throughout the bout. Mercedes Martinez rushed out to deal some more damage to Ruby, but a fired up Thunder Rosa made the save as the two brawled to the back. Ruby would not say die, peppering Cargill with a series of kicks, and fighting out of everything Jade hit her with. Smart Mark Sterling distracted the ref after Soho came close after a Saito Suplex, allowing Jade to go for Jaded. Ruby rolled through and hit the No Future, but Cargill kicked out at two, and as Ruby went for an avalanche arm drag, Jade hit a huge second-rope Jaded for the win and the title. 

Tony Schiavone caught up with Ruby Soho after her spirited loss, leading to Britt Baker interrupting to rub salt in the wounds. DMD and Jamie Hayter attacked, leading to a furious Riho to make the save, before AEW officials broke things up.

Our main event saw Jurassic Express take on the AEW World Tag Team Champions The Lucha Brothers for the titles. As expected this was a frenetic affair, with the two teams having lovely chemistry together. Neither team could break the deadlock, with every competitor getting their time to shine, whether it was Jungle Boy and Fenix trying to out-wow one another, or Penta and Luchasaurus chopping seven bells out of one another. After getting the hot-tag to Luchasaurus, Jurassic Express went into the next gear, but Penta and Fenix fired back with a series of Canadian destroyers, before the lights went out, teasing the arrival of Malakai Black after The Lucha Brothers stared off against Black earlier in the night. The Luchas hit Fear Factor on Jungle Boy to seal the deal, but JB kicked out at two and three quarters as Alex Abrahantes prepared a table at ringside before Christian Cage chased him to the back. Luchasaurus cut off Fenix and nailed a chokeslam off the apron through the table, with Fenix landing horribly on his arm - think Sid Vicious off the top rope in WCW and you get the picture. Penta and Jungle Boy continued in-ring, with Jungle Boy getting the shock roll-up out of nowhere to win the titles. 

Post-ring, Christian Cage came out to celebrate with the new champions, as the entire tag team division came to the stage to show Jurassic Express what they’ve got ahead of them, as Chris Jericho and Malakai Black looked on from the stands.

Elsewhere:

The Acclaimed bragged about beating down Darby Allin and promised a music video next week.
Chris Jericho cut a babyface promo before 2point0 and Daniel Garcia attacked, leading to Eddie Kingston and Proud & Powerful to make the save.
Adam Cole cosied up to KOR and Bobby Fish some more, before challenging Jake Atlas to a match on Rampage.
An exasperated Wardlow had another dominant powerbomb filled victory, after a vicious DVD from Shawn Spears weakened his opponent. More discontent growing in The Pinnacle.
Serena Deeb sat down with J.R. to disparage Hikaru Shida, Deeb saying she is the best in the division.
Malakai Black demolished Brian Pillman Jr. as an eyepatch sporting Julia Hart watched on.
