NJPW Brings Back Sakura Genesis

Sakura Genesis returns in 2023

Sakura Genesis has been re-added to the New Japan Pro-Wrestling Calendar.

After the event was replaced with Hyper Attack for 2022, NJPW have announced that Sakura Genesis 2023 will take place on April 8 at Ryogoku Sumo Hall. The event will take place following a Road to Sakura Genesis tour that will begin on April 1, with shows then set to take place on April 2, April 3, and April 4.

New Japan held their first Sakura Genesis show in 2017 and the event often features the IWGP Heavyweight/World Heavyweight Champion defending their title against the winner of the New Japan Cup in the main event. 2023 will be the fourth Sakura Genesis, with the show also missing from the 2019 and 2020 schedules in addition to 2022.

The 2021 edition of Sakura Genesis was main evented by an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match between Kota Ibushi and Will Ospreay.

Sakura Genesis 2023 takes place only a few weeks after the final of the New Japan Cup, so will likely feature an IWGP World Heavyweight Title match in the main event this time around.
