NJPW Confirm Show Postponements In Wake Of Extended State Of Emergency

New Japan Pro Wrestling have confirmed that their two Wrestle Grand Slam events in May have been postponed in the wake of the Japanese government's decision to extend the state of emergency. 

Originally set to come to an end on Tuesday 11 May, Japan have decided to extend their coronavirus state of emergency in Tokyo, Osaka, Hyogo, and Kyoto prefectures until the end of the month. Two more prefectures, Aichi and Fukuoka, have also been added.

In light of the decision, NJPW have announced that their two stadium shows, set for Yokohama and Tokyo, will be postponed. 

A statement issued by the promotion read: "On Friday May 7, the Japanese government announced an extension to the state of emergency currently in place in Tokyo and other prefectures. 

"In light of this announcement, as well as current COVID-19 infection status, and in order to prevent any potential further spread of the virus, New Japan Pro-Wrestling has arrived at the decision to postpone the Wrestle Grand Slam events in Yokohama Stadium and the Tokyo Dome previously scheduled for May 15 and 29 respectively.

"NJPW deeply apologizes to all fans looking forward to these events for the inconvenience and disappointment caused."

New dates for the two events are in the process of being finalised with NJPW asking fans to retain their tickets. Those who cannot attend the new dates for the shows will be eligible for a refund.

The only match officially announced for either of the two shows was between Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, at the Tokyo Dome.
