Report: Update On WWE's Plans For Women's Tag Team Title Tournament

Several different pitches have been made

Dave Meltzer has provided an update on the planned tournament to crown new WWE Women's Tag Team Champions.

WWE announced that a tournament would be held after reigning champions Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of WWE earlier this month. Prior to walking out, they handed the title belts to Senior Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis.

Banks and Naomi were subsequently suspended indefinitely and their WWE status going forward remains up in the air.

According to Meltzer, writing in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there have been different pitches made regarding how the tournament will play out. At least two of the pitches involved a four-team tournament.

In one idea, the four teams would be Natalya & Shayna Baszler, Tamina & Dana Brooke, Nikki ASH & Doudrop, and Carmella & Queen Zelina.

Besides Natalya & Baszler, there are no other teams being used regularly. Nikki ASH & Doudrop did team up once, losing to Banks & Naomi on the May 9 episode of Raw and seem to be aligned based on recent WWE TV.

Queen Zelina's involvement in the tournament is also highly unlikely as she recently underwent surgery on an injury and will be out of action for another six to eight weeks.
