CM Punk Officially Cleared, Return Match Set For WWE SummerSlam

CM Punk cleared for WWE SummerSlam match against Drew McIntyre

After months of anticipation, CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre will be one of the headline matches at SummerSlam.

Punk made his return on Monday's edition of Raw and announced that he was cleared and wanted to fight Drew McIntyre immediately. This brought out Drew McIntyre who said he wasn't interested in fighting Punk on Raw in Green Bay since it deserved to be a big-money match. McIntyre then retrieved the bracelet with AJ Lee and Larry's names on it and as referees held Punk back, Adam Pearce announced that McIntyre had been reinstated and he would be facing Punk at SummerSlam.

CM Punk still wanted to have the match on Raw but Pearce announced the two former WWE champions would be suspended if they so much as touched each other before SummerSlam. Seth Rollins then made his way to the ring, separating both CM Punk and Drew McIntyre as it was revealed he would be the special guest referee for their singles match at SummerSlam.

CM Punk had been out of action since suffering a torn triceps in the men's Royal Rumble back in January following a Futureshock DDT from Drew McIntyre. This ultimately set up the programme between the two talents and Punk has remained a presence on WWE TV, constantly costing McIntyre the World Heavyweight Championship since WrestleMania 40. Punk was working to get cleared last week and he was spotted at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.

Also set for SummerSlam is an Intercontinental Title match between Sami Zayn and Bron Breakker. The 'Puppy Faced Gremlin' earned the title shot with a win over Ilja Dragunov on Raw. Breakker and Zayn previously faced off at Money in the Bank, with it later revealed that WWE booked Zayn to win as they wanted Breakker's title victory to happen on a bigger stage

SummerSlam 2024 will emanate from Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday, August 3. The updated card is as follows:

  • Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Solo Sikoa - Undisputed WWE Championship
  • Damian Priest (c) vs. Gunther - World Heavyweight Championship
  • CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre - Seth Rollins is the special guest referee
