Cody Rhodes Reveals AEW Are Taking It Slow With Introducing A Second Men's Championship
Still a long way to go...
At Double Or Nothing, Bret "The Hitman" Hart introduced the All Elite Wrestling World Championship. Chris Jericho then went on to win the new title at All Out back in August 2019. Since Dynamite debuted in October, however, many fans have been clamouring for the promotion to introduce a second men's title to provide a focus for mid-card talents like Shawn Spears, Joey Janela, Kip Sabian and Luchasaurus.
AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes recently appeared on Wrestling Observer Radio, in which he was asked about the young promotion's plans to introduce a second title. He explained it was an idea "that's on the table" but they don't plan to introduce a new championship any time soon. Cody almost committed to proposing they introduce the title in 2020, but added that Nick Jackson would Superkick him if he did so.
Cody said: "You’ve got to talk to Tony, it’s an idea obviously that’s on the table, but what do you do first? Do you do a Women’s Tag title first? Or do you do a title that’s not unlike the Television title? These are real questions and I think we have an idea that’s different than anything that’s been done and I would just hope that everybody remains patient and they’re kind of yearning or they lust for that type of belt or championship. I think satiated in 2020…But if I was to say 'There’s a mid-card title coming to AEW' Nick Jackson would Superkick my skull clean off my head because we’re moving slow and it's something that the EVP’s have to agree on. But there’s a really great idea in gestation. It would make all the sense in the world."
