G1 Climax Moved To October As NJPW Announce 2020 Schedule

The Olympic Games has an impact...

Over the weekend, New Japan Pro Wrestling held their first shows of 2020 as Wrestle Kingdom 14 was broadcast live from the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan.

During the show, the promotion confirmed the G1 Climax had been moved to October as they announced their 2020 schedule. While the tournament is usually held in July and August, New Japan seemingly chose to move the G1 to the Autumn to avoid conflicting with the Olympic Games which Tokyo is hosting.

New Japan did not announce any shows for the Summer, but Dave Meltzer speculated on Wrestling Observer Radio that they will embark on another tour of the United States. He said: "I know that the idea of a big show this year in the US was August, but that's obviously not finalised."

New Japan's 2020 schedule is as follows:

  • The New Beginning In Sapporo - February 1st & 2nd

  • The New Beginning In Osaka - February 9th

  • 48th Anniversary Show - March 3rd

  • New Japan Cup Finals - March 20th & 21st

  • Sakura Genesis - March 31st

  • Wrestling Satsuma no Kuni - April 29th

  • Wrestling Dontaku - May 3rd & 4th

  • Best Of The Super Juniors 27 Final - June 6th

  • Dominion - June 14th

  • G1 Climax 30 Finals - October 16th, 17th & 18th
