Billy Gunn: D-Generation X Wasn't Good Until The New Age Outlaws Joined

Billy Gunn believes the New Age Outlaws made D-Generation X good

They are one of the most important groups in WWE history, and one of the hottest acts of the fabled Attitude Era, but according to Billy Gunn, D-Generation X wasn’t any good until the New Age Outlaws joined.

Initially formed by Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chyna, and Rick Rude, DX were joined by affiliates Billy Gunn and Road Dogg Jesse James in 1998, with the two becoming official members after WrestleMania XIV. During an appearance on AEW Unrestricted, Gunn claims this is when the group got interesting:

“When the first two — I hate saying their names. I just hate saying their names. When Hunter and Shawn [Michaels] did it, it was something different,” Billy Gunn said. “It was something new. It was something not wrestling, but it’s on a wrestling show, but it caught on because of the personalities that those two had. Those two did the same thing.

“They fed off each other did some silly stuff. And were — oh, this is gonna hurt, but they were pretty good. I know, that hurts so bad. I’m gonna need a lot of counselling after this show. But I think when Shawn went away, and I’m gonna hold to this to this day, DX did not get good until me and Brian got on there till we were in it.

“Because now you have five people, and it’s a whole different dynamic. Now you have everybody and anybody that could do everything and anything. And everybody played their parts so good. And as a unit, we were just unstoppable and still doing the entertaining stuff. And just doing more wrestling stuff.”

Rick Rude departed the group and WWE after the Montreal Screwjob, with Michaels leaving DX after dropping the title to Steve Austin at Mania XIV and retiring. After Michaels' departure, Triple H assumed leadership of the group, formally inducting the New Age Outlaws and a returning X-Pac into the group. The group - sans Rude, Tori, and Hornswoggle - were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019.
