While the main event of WrestleMania 37 was originally set to be Roman Reigns vs. Edge for the Universal Championship, Bryan Danielson - then Daniel Bryan - was added to the title match after Edge cost The American Dragon the gold at the Fastlane pay-per-view a few weeks earlier.

Danielson's main event match at The Showcase of The Immortals came only a few weeks before his WWE contract expired at the end of April and the former WWE Champion revealed to Asbury Park Press that him being in the Universal Title match was his most surprising moment of 2021.

"The thing that surprised me the most (in 2021) was being inserted into the main event of WrestleMania. When I started the year, I knew my contract was ending and I was part of the creative team with WWE and I was like, 'OK, what's the best thing for me to do on my way out?' And it was certainly not (being part of) the main event of WrestleMania," Danielson said.

A few months after his WWE contract expired, Danielson made his All Elite Wrestling debut at the All Out pay-per-view and he jumped straight to the top of the card, facing Kenny Omega and Hangman Page in time-limit draws in recent months.
