Cody Rhodes has denied he ever pitched to lose the WWE Championship and criticised pro wrestling discourse on X/Twitter.

"What I can say is the conversations that take place on, say X specific, they only take place there. If you could just take that one step back, get out of your bubble, get out and just look. None of this – these aren’t real. You don’t know any of these guys personally. They’re a business. They need content on the daily. These stories are wildly made up. Then you’ll read three months later," Cody said on the Double Coverage Podcast.

"This is how I knew it had gotten crazy. There was a story that I had pitched to lose the title. And now I saw somebody referencing - this was like eight months ago - like, 'Well don’t forget when he pitched.' If you ever hear of a story of a wrestler pitching to lose a title, you should know right out of the gate they’re lying. No wrestler has ever said, 'You know what?' There’s a difference between an old man figuring out who his last opponent is but no wrestler has ever said, 'Yeah, I need to lose the title.' My gosh, that’s the meal ticket. You want somebody to take it from you. You don’t pitch it," he continued.

"And I saw that being talked about as if it was actual evidence and I thought, 'Oh man, I wish you knew. I wish you guys knew that these conversations are just here.' Come to a show and you will see, 'Oh, people are having a great time. They love all this.'"

Cody's comments come after it was reported by Bodyslam+ (now TRNBCKL Gold) at the time that both Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre pushed for McIntyre to win the WWE Championship from Rhodes in a Three Stages of Hell Match on the January 9, 2026, episode of SmackDown. The two wrestlers reportedly had earlier pitched for McIntyre to win the belt at Wrestlepalooza 2025.

Cody Rhodes has held the WWE Championship across three reigns since first winning the title from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL. McIntyre's win on January 9 ended Cody's second reign as champion but Rhodes regained the title in March. Rhodes' most recent reign as WWE Champion came to an end at Night of Champions when he lost to Sami Zayn in a Triple Threat that also included Gunther.
