Davey Boy Smith is one the most iconic wrestlers in British history, with the legendary British Bulldog a household name during his pomp in 1990s WWE.
Amongst Bulldog’s accolades are runs as Intercontinental, European, and Tag Team Champion, a WWE Hall of Fame induction, and that main event classic with Bret Hart at SummerSlam 1992 in Wembley Stadium. However, Davey Boy’s legacy hasn’t been honoured in his home town of Wigan, and his family aren’t pleased.
Wigan has its own walk of fame, known as ‘Believe Stars’, with local heroes such as Sir Ian McKellan, Ella Toone, and Dave Whelan honoured, but so far no spot for Davey Boy as Wigan Council state they only honour living recipients.
"When you think of famous people from Wigan, my dad is number one in my eyes for what he did on a global stage. I think it's only right he is recognised in his hometown. He's been recognised by the WWE in their hall of fame, but his family in the UK couldn't be there because it was during Covid," said Smith’s daughter Georgia to the Daily Star.
"It's ridiculous in my opinion. Hollywood has a walk of fame and they give out posthumous stars, so I don't understand why Wigan can't."
A council spokesman said: "Our walk of fame celebrates the contributions of living residents of Wigan Borough. While Davey Boy Smith does not meet the criteria to be considered for a star, there are alternative ways to commemorate his memory, which we are happy to discuss with the family."
The Smith family have released a petition campaigning for Davey Boy to get his due recognition. You can sign it here.
