Back on April 15, WWE released 37 Superstars after the company announced they would be making cutbacks because of the coronavirus pandemic. In the moments after his release, Drake Maverick took to social media and posted a tearful video in which he told fans he would still be wrestling in the Interim NXT Championship Tournament and promised to give them everything he has.

Millions of people quickly got behind Maverick and he ultimately made it to the final as he went one on one with El Hijo Del Fantasma on last night's episode of NXT.

Maverick almost had the match won after he landed a Flying Elbow but Fantasma managed to kick out at two. This was the closest Drake came to winning, as after he fended off the masked luchadors who have been harassing Fantasma in recent weeks, the former Lucha Underground star picked Maverick up and connected with the Phantom Driver for the 1-2-3.

The new NXT Cruiserweight Champion quickly exited the arena, leaving Spud to give a heartfelt goodbye to the fans watching at home. However, as the former 205 Live General Manager made his way up the ramp, Triple H suddenly entered the arena, said, "You deserve this," and handed Maverick an NXT contract.

With that, Drake Maverick signed a new WWE contract weeks after he thought his in-ring career was over.
