TNA Wrestling have scrapped the plans they were working on with John Layfield (AKA JBL), with the former WWE Champion revealing he was originally planned to be involved at Slammiversary on July 20.
"Last night at the show I was supposed to be there initially and I was originally supposed to have…really a part that people wouldn't have believed how big it was. That did not work out. The reason that got ended in TNA, it wasn't because of me..it was a decision made by someone that was no longer there," Layfield said on Something To Wrestle With.
Plans were ultimately changed, however, as TNA changed their minds, although it was noted that the change of plans was not because of a decision made by TNA President Carlos Silva or Tommy Dreamer.
"I was supposed to have a real escalation of what we were doing in TNA. We had the whole thing planned out...all that stuff was going somewhere. I told everybody it was and it was, it was going somewhere and I thought it was. I was very, very excited about it. I was training for it, I got in really good shape for it. I was ready to go and then they called me one day and said, 'Hey, we're changing our mind.' And that’s their prerogative," JBL continued.
"The person that said it is no longer there and what they changed to it never happened...I never got brought back into it after that. There is a reason it all kind of got put on, not on the backburner, taken off the burner completely."
JBL popped up here, there and everywhere in pro wrestling in 2024, appearing for the likes of AAA, GCW, MLW, and on the indies where he would turn up and hit wrestlers with the Clothesline from Hell. John Layfield also made several appearances for TNA, including at Bound for Glory 2024 where he cost Joe Hendry the TNA World Title, and at Genesis 2025 where he prevented Frankie Kazarian from cashing in his Call Your Shot title match to assist Hendry in defeating Nic Nemeth for the world title.
It was revealed in 2024 that Bruce Prichard was the mastermind behind JBL's surprise appearances.
