Kevin Owens recently returned to WWE at SummerSlam 2026, coming back after over a year out of the ring due to him undergoing neck surgery. Prior to the surgery, Owens’ last match was at the 2025 Elimination Chamber PLE, taking on Sami Zayn in an Unsanctioned match. Owens has now revealed that this was the match that caused him to realise something was wrong.
Speaking to the Toronto Sun, Owens spoke on the fact that his legs were not working properly in the aftermath of his match with Zayn.
“Early January, something was wrong. Then it got better and then, you know, I had (a) pretty insane Ladder match with Cody Rhodes at the Royal Rumble which I managed to walk away from relatively okay. Then the match at Elimination Chamber happened and at the end of that match, I realized, oh, things still are not right because my legs, again, were not — basically, best way I could put it is my legs didn’t function properly. They weren’t responding how they should. So once that happened, and then it didn’t get better, we obviously realized something pretty serious was going on…”
Owens defeated Gunther, Finn Balor & Sami Zayn to become the new number one contender for the WWE Championship, before losing to rival CM Punk in their title match.
