El Grande Americano has his hands raised by the referee in a wrestling ring after winning a match, whilst his opponent lays on the ring mat.

Since WWE debuted El Grande Americano, the gimmick has received some backlash over perceived insensitive depictions of Mexican and Lucha Libre culture.

Indeed, the decision to bill Americano from the ‘Gulf of America’ was criticised for making light of real-world events, however, lucha legend Konnan has defended the gimmick, saying the following on his Keepin’ it 100 podcast:

“You just can’t be outwardly racial. You have to be very funny and kind of subtle about it. But it’s a parody, you know what I’m saying? I have no problem with it,” said Konnan whilst pointing out how pro-wrestling has often been ‘behind the curve on racial sensitivity’.

“I think the most important part, is it demeaning Mexicans? No, it isn’t,” continued Konnan. “If you remember the lawnmower thing - the Mexicools - very demeaning, you know? I also thought the piñatas were demeaning with the Lucha… whatever, Lucha House Party.”

El Grande Americano is reportedly being considered for an appearance at AAA Triplemania Regia on June 15 as part of the new relationship between WWE and AAA.
