Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon has been confirmed as the United States Secretary of Education, with the Senate approving McMahon's nomination with a 51-45 vote. McMahon will now have the unusual task of leading a department which President Donald Trump is looking to dismantle.
Trump is reportedly preparing to sign an executive order instructing McMahon to cut the Department of Education's operations to the legal minimum. Trump is also pushing for Congress to shut down the department.
McMahon is just the latest Trump loyalist to be appointed to the WWE Hall of Famer's cabinet. McMahon has an extremely limited background in education, having spent one year on Connecticut's state board of education and served as a trustee at Sacred Heart University. McMahon instead spent much of her career working for WWE until 2009 when she moved into politics.
McMahon was one of Trump's biggest donors during his 2024 presidential campaign and she is the Chair of the American First Policy Institute, a Trump-aligned thinktank. The America First Policy Institute's Vice Chair of the Center for Energy & Environment Carla Sands recently bizarrely claimed on BBC Newsnight that Joe Biden started the Russia-Ukraine War.
Linda McMahon - along with Vince McMahon, WWE, and TKO Group Holdings - is currently being sued by former WWE ring boys. It has been alleged that Linda McMahon and the other defendants were aware of the sexual abuse carried out by Mel Phillips but did nothing to prevent or stop it. Phillips allegedly groomed, exploited, and sexually abused underage WWE ring boys, who helped set up the ring at WWE events in the 1980s and 1990s.
The lawsuit was mentioned during McMahon's confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee when Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin expressed her concern about whether sexual assault survivors at universities could trust McMahon. The 76-year-old claimed they could.
