Professional wrestling and video games collided to make something beautiful in 1999.

At the time, Nintendo were set to launch the first Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, with the game set to be released on April 26, 1999, in North America.

To promote the game, Nintendo headed to Las Vegas and the company held Slamfest '99 on April 24 at the MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park, which featured a 17-minute tag team match that pitted Mario and Yoshi against Donkey Kong and Pikachu.

According to Nintendorks and N64 Magazine recaps from 1999, the match saw Mario go on a "crazed rampage" where he hit all of the other competitors, while Donkey Kong accidentally hit himself with his mallet of doom. Mario would even slightly turn heel as he decked one of the other characters with a low blow, while the referee bit Pikachu's ear and said they tasted like chicken.

The match came to an end after all four characters smashed into each other and collapsed to the mat, with the bout being ruled a draw.

The event was live-streamed but it has been lost to time. Some new photos have emerged of the show, however, courtesy of Ed Espinoza, who was a producer on Slamfest '99. You can check out the images here.

A fun fact is the costumes for the match were the same ones that were used in the classic 'Happy Together' commercial for Super Smash Bros.
