18 months on from the formation of a working relationship between the two promotions, All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro-Wrestling held their first-ever joint show on June 26, 2022, as Forbidden Door emanated from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
With a swathe of injuries affecting the AEW roster, including to AEW World Champion CM Punk and Bryan Danielson, expectations weren't high heading into Forbidden Door. AEW and NJPW quickly blew everyone away, though, as the two promotions put together the best show of 2022.
