Report: AEW Asked AAA To Hold Off On Andrade Defeating Kenny Omega

Omega retained the Mega Title on Saturday

Kenny Omega retained the AAA Mega championship over Andrade el Idolo at Saturday night's Triplemania XXIX in Mexico City, but this was apparently not the original plan.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Andrade was originally scheduled to defeat Omega for the title, but AEW asked AAA to hold off on the title change.

Meltzer explained that AEW has control over Omega's finishes in other promotions, and made the request to have him win on Saturday. Meltzer posits that the request was due to Omega having lost the Impact World title to Christian Cage on Friday night, and didn't want Omega losing on consecutive nights.

Omega is scheduled to wrestle Cage once again at All Out on September 5 in Chicago, for the AEW World Heavyweight title. His next AAA title defense is not presently known.

Omega defeated Andrade in a 25 minute match, after striking the challenger with the title belt, before hitting the One Winged Angel.

The match was notable for the presence of Ric Flair in Andrade's corner. Both he and Konnan (Omega's cornerman) got physically involved in the match's later stages.
