Report: Frustration Within AEW Over Tag Team Title Scene

Frustration about the AEW tag team title picture after Jeff Hardy's injury

There has been internal frustration over the AEW World Tag Team Championship picture in recent weeks prior to Wednesday's title change.

A report from Fightful Select noted AEW talent told them that prior to Double Or Nothing on May 29, the promotion were considering booking The Hardys to win the tag team titles. That changed following the pay-per-view, though, and AEW instead switched their plans to likely putting the belts on The Young Bucks. That is, of course, what happened at Dynamite when The Young Bucks defeated Jurassic Express in a Ladder Match.

Jeff Hardy's performance at Double Or Nothing in The Hardys' match against Matt and Nick Jackson was said to be a cause for concern amongst talent and the former WWE Tag Champions chances of winning AEW gold "dwindled immediately" after May 29. Matt Hardy has previously noted that Jeff was "knocked loopy" early in the Double Or Nothing match.

Furthermore, some talent in AEW were frustrated following a recent weekend in which Jeff Hardy was publicly intoxicated. There was then further frustration about the tag team title picture after Jeff's injury at Double Or Nothing and there were "some indications that a situation like this could happen again."

Jeff Hardy was arrested on a DUI charge on Monday, June 13 and the 44-year-old admitted to police that he had double shots of Fireball before he got in the vehicle to drive. Hardy has since been suspended and his return is conditional upon completing treatment and maintaining his sobriety.
