Report: How Kenny Omega's NJPW Return Came Together Revealed

Kenny Omega will return to NJPW at Wrestle Kingdom 17

On the four-year anniversary of his final match in the promotion, Kenny Omega will return to New Japan Pro-Wrestling at Wrestle Kingdom 17 to challenge Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship.

Omega made his shock New Japan return at the NJPW x Stardom Historic X-Over show on Sunday, November 20 as he appeared on the titantron and cut a scathing promo on Ospreay, telling The Commonwealth Kingpin he was the real virus in NJPW.

A match between Omega and Ospreay had been teased for months, with both men insulting each other in interviews and on social media for over a year. They then came face-to-face in All Elite Wrestling in August in the AEW World Trios Title Tournament.

As many would have assumed, plans for an Omega vs. Ospreay match had been in the works for some time and Fightful Select reported that talks over a match began in the summer.  The match hadn't been finalised by the time Omega was suspended following his involvement in a brawl with CM Punk, Ace Steel, and The Young Bucks at All Out, though. Everything was ultimately finalised in the last two or three weeks.

Rocky Romero was said to be instrumental in getting Omega vs. Ospreay put together and the Roppongi Vice man has been a huge factor in NJPW's global expansion. Rocky Romero and Tony Khan were in frequent contact at one point as they completed deals.
