While many expected Kenny Omega's reign as AAA Mega Champion to come to an end on Saturday at TripleMania XXIX, The Best Bout Machine ended up retaining the title against Andrade El Idolo.

Following the event, it was reported by Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer that Andrade was originally booked to defeat Omega but All Elite Wrestling asked AAA to hold off on the title change. Fightful Select also noted that AEW made the request to AAA as far back as early July.

Since Omega is contracted to AEW, Tony Khan's promotion have control over The Belt Collector's finishes in other companies.

That isn't the whole story, though. In an update on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer reported there were plenty of discussions about a possible title change on Saturday.

According to Meltzer, Kenny Omega pitched to lose the AAA Mega Championship after he discovered Ric Flair would be in Andrade's corner as The Best Bout Machine thought it would be a "great story." Tony Khan was reportedly fine with Omega losing by that point but AAA decided to keep the belt on the AEW World Champion, despite Flair's presence on the show.

Omega's win at TripleMania was his fifth successful AAA Mega Title defence. The 37-year-old defeated Rey Fenix for the gold back in October 2019.
