Report: Nigel McGuinness Suffered Legitimate Foot Injury During AEW Continental Cup

Nigel McGuinness' foot injury that was factored heavily into his AEW Continental Cup matches, including at All In 2026, was actually legitimate.

Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer has reported that McGuinness legitimately hurt his foot in the Continental Challenge Cup and the decision was made to turn the situation into a storyline through to the Wembley Stadium show. Alvarez noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that McGuinness is believed to have sustained the injury while blocking a penalty kick from Katsuyori Shibata in their first-round match, which was taped on August 12 and aired on August 15.

McGuinness, in a walking boot, cut a promo during the Continental Cup quarter-finals draw that he would not be withdrawing from the tournament.

The former ROH World Champion went on to defeat Hechicero in the quarter-finals and Kyle O'Reilly in the semi-finals. This led to the final against AEW Continental Champion Jon Moxley for both the title and the cup. The foot injury was factored heavily into the match, with McGuinness ultimately tapping out to an ankle lock when he was just fingertips away from the ropes.

Speculation had suggested that Nigel McGuinness may retire from in-ring action following the Wembley Stadium match, but the 50-year-old noted in a promo after All In that he "will go on to fight another day."

"I said if I was going to lose, it would haunt me forever... but the reality is, far from being haunted, I feel as though I exorcised the ghost of my fear of failure. My fear of not doing enough, not being enough. Thirty-four years ago I sat out there where everyone was sat. Today, I hope you will forgive me it’s here. Thirty-four years later a dream only imaginable to that young boy just came true. Moxley’s still the Continental Champion but I will go on to fight another day. I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the commentary desk," McGuinness stated.
