The pitch presented in WWE: Unreal for Kevin Owens to suddenly win the Undisputed WWE Title at Elimination Chamber is said to be "complete bullsh*t."
WWE: Unreal was released this week on Netflix, with the series providing a behind-the-scenes look at WWE creative in the build to WrestleMania 41. The show focused upon John Cena's heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber and Brian Gewirtz, a close confidante of The Rock, claimed on the show that an idea he and Dwayne Johnson pitched would have seen Owens defeat Cody Rhodes after Cody turned down 'The Final Boss' at the February pay-per-view.
"The prospect of babyface John and babyface Cody felt a little dry to us. But just looking at it from the outside, like let's throw some controlled chaos into this. So myself and Rock, we got together and pitched something that was twofold. I had the idea of Cody needing to be Rock’s champion and we had that as the hook. We proposed at Elimination Chamber Cody turning down the Final Boss and that was gonna lead to the Final Boss making an impromptu title match right then and there that resulted in Kevin Owens, who had been in a storyline with Cody during that time, leaving with the championship. Kevin Owens winning the title wasn't the end goal, the takeaway was whatever we need to do needs to be seismic," Gewirtz said.
Dave Meltzer has reported on Wrestling Observer Radio, however, that he was told the pitch for Owens to win the WWE Title is "complete bullsh*t."
"There was some stuff in there that was just complete bullsh*t. You know, I've asked some people about it and it was kind of like some stuff was complete bullsh*t, some stuff was kind of real…I can't say complete bullsh*t, although I was told complete bullsh*t, was the idea that they were considering Cody Rhodes losing the title to Kevin Owens at the Elimination Chamber...I just saw that [WWE: Unreal] and I can't say it's bullsh*t but it's a terrible idea, and then I was told it's kind of bullsh*t," Meltzer said.
Elimination Chamber ultimately resulted in John Cena turning heel after Cody Rhodes turned down selling his soul to The Rock. Kevin Owens has been away from WWE TV for several months with a serious neck injury.
