Report: WWE Originally Wanted To Pair Pat McAfee With NFL's Aaron Rodgers

WWE had plans to team Pat McAfee with NFL great Aaron Rodgers

According to a report from Sports Illustrated, WWE originally wanted to pair SmackDown commentator (and sometimes wrestler) Pat McAfee with one of his closest friends from the NFL.

The site noted that WWE wanted McAfee to be aligned with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on NXT television.

WWE were considering having McAfee return to NXT following his impressive showing at the TakeOver: WarGames show back in 2020, with the plan for Pat to attack Adam Cole and team with Rodgers.

It would have no doubt brought NXT huge mainstream publicity, but never ended up happening.

As the SI article states, however, McAfee is connected with many high-profile names who could be brought in at a later date.

NFL stars teaming in wrestling is not unprecedented, with Steve 'Mongo' McMichael and Kevin Greene famously tagging against Ric Flair and Arn Anderson at WCW's Great American Bash pay-per-view in 1996.
