Report: WWE Set For Madison Square Garden Return in September

A return home for Vince McMahon's promotion

WWE will reportedly return to Madison Square Garden in New York City for the September 10 2021 episode of Friday Night SmackDown.

PWInsider is reporting that Madison Square Garden officials have confirmed WWE's return to their longstanding home arena, after the Foo Fighters played the venue in front of a full capacity earlier this week.

MSG has been operating for New York Rangers and New York Knicks games at a limited capacity in recent months.

WWE had two scheduled events at Madison Square Garden cancelled during the pandemic. A show in March 2020 was initially postponed until June, before being altogether called off, while the traditional December 26th post-Christmas event had not been announced, but was believed to be in the works.

New Japan Pro Wrestling was also slated to run MSG in August 2020 with the first-ever Wrestling Dynasty event.

Madison Square Garden was shut down on 20 March 2020, after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo put a stop to all public gatherings over 500 at the time. The venue had announced: “We support Governor Cuomo’s decision and starting tomorrow night, our New York venues will only host events that adhere to the Governor’s very clear parameters. This is a fluid situation and we will be back with further details when available."
