Sammy Guevara Wins Interim AEW TNT Title At Battle Of The Belts

Guevara holds the gold for now

Sammy Guevara is now the interim AEW TNT champion, after defeating Dustin Rhodes in a match at AEW Battle of the Belts on Saturday night in Charlotte.

Late in the bout, Guevara managed to kick out after Rhodes performed a Canadian Destroyer off the apron through a ringside table. Back inside, the two exchanged a number of pinfall attempts before Guevara was able to successfully stack Rhodes in the sunset pin position for the win.

After the match, David Crockett, brother of Jim Crockett Jr and himself a former Mid-Atlantic broadcaster, awarded Guevara the championship belt. Rhodes also embraced Guevara out of respect.

Daniel Garcia then confronted Guevara, and the two began exchanging blows before they were separated by officials. Guevara later said he would defend the belt against Garcia on Dynamite.

Guevara was originally supposed to face TNT champion Cody Rhodes, the man who won the belt from him over two weeks ago. However, Rhodes is temporarily sidelined with a medical issue.

In all likelihood, once he receives medical clearance, Cody will likely face Guevara (or whomever the interim TNT champion is at the time) in a match to determine the undisputed TNT champion (similar to how it works in UFC).
