A major Hell in a Cell match was originally listed for the WrestleMania 42 card prior to WWE changing their plans.
The Undisputed WWE Championship match at WrestleMania is scheduled to be Cody Rhodes defending the belt against Randy Orton. Cody regained the WWE Title from Drew McIntyre on the March 6 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, while Randy Orton earned the WWE Championship match at WrestleMania courtesy of his win inside the Elimination Chamber on February 28.
WWE's original plan for the Undisputed WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 42, according to PWInsider, was for Drew McIntyre to put the belt on the line against Cody Rhodes. That match also would have been inside Hell in a Cell.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE internally decided to pivot to Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes around the time Orton began promoting that he was looking to break John Cena's record of 17 world title reigns.
"The Randy stuff, from what I was told, when they started going with the idea of Randy it would have been the week that they started pushing this idea that Randy's going for the John Cena record. Before that, they had no inclination of that direction. But when they first started pushing Randy going for the John Cena record, that was when Randy was in the picture," Meltzer said.
There has been no official confirmation about Drew McIntyre's new plans for WrestleMania 42, although WWE TV would suggest he is in line for a singles match with Jacob Fatu.
