The War Report - March 17 2021: Blood. Thumbtacks. Ripped Jackets.
NXT vs. AEW: Dynamite - which was the better show this week?
It’s NXT, so it started with what our very own Tom Campbell called a ‘video package promo’ between Finn Bálor, Karrion Kross, and Scarlett - ie: you know clips of this will appear in the TakeOver pre-match video. Kross said he’s going to choke Finn out at TakeOver, Finn said Kross will just choke at TakeOver. Scarlett said some spooky stuff about tarot, and Lorcan and Burch interrupted, setting up the main event. Not bad for the start of the feud.
We had a quick word from Ciampa who said Thatch wasn’t there and he assumed it was Imperium’s doing. TC then said he’ll take out Imperium one-by-one, basically. We also saw Dakota Kai explaining how much she needs a tag match against Io Shirai and Zoey Stark next week, but Raquel Gonzalez wasn’t too arsed. She’s number one contender now, Kai is dead weight now after all.
Santos Escobar and Jordan Devlin had words about the Cruiserweight Title and made their match official for TakeOver, and Grizzled Young Veterans were absolutely fuming with MSK after their attack on Zack Gibson’s arm last week.
The big promo of the week though was from Adam Cole, but more on that in a minute…
A very strong mic week from AEW after recent episodes have let their actions do more of the talking.
After the close of last week’s show where MJF and his new mates turned the Inner Circle into puddles of piss, we were all awaiting the inevitable MJF promo.
But first, Tully Blanchard took the stick, and amongst other things called this group ‘The Pinnacle’ which MJF doubled down on. MJF was at his acerbic best though. He put over his stable mates massively, before giving himself a massive and well deserved pat on the back. He also mentioned how pretending to be Chris Jericho’s friend was ‘no walk in the park... something Jericho should do more of’, before fully sending Jericho to the burns unit by mocking his hairline and the width between his pecs.
We also heard from Mox and Kingston who riffed on everything from Forky from Toy Story, Talk-N-Shop-A-Mania, Bullet Club, and the nWo. And they managed to have a point too; they hate the Good Brothers.
Sting’s contractually obliged interview with Tony Schiavone was again cut short by an irate Lance Archer who either wants the TNT Title, or to kill Sting - I’m not exactly sure - then Team Taz came out to rip Sting, but Brian Cage instead offered his respect as Taz went spare. In amongst all this, Darby Allin admitted his TNT Title reign has been poo, and issued an open challenge to the Dark Order to fight for the title and Brodie Lee’s honour next week. Nice touch.
We heard from Miro - more on that in a minute - and Don Callis got into the Young Bucks’ head, similar to his IMPACT promo with Rich Swann, but a fraction of the length.
Winner: AEW. Tully was great, MJF was great, and it was nice to hear Lance and Cage get more than just a few grunts in. Also, check Don Callis’ promo from IMPACT if you haven’t seen it, it was crackin’.
