Both Tony Khan and WBD have remained pretty silent on the topic of ownership details in regards to stakes in AEW ever since the promotion began, though discussion sparked up in recent months thanks Tony Maglio of The Hollywood Reporter claiming last month that WBD owned a minority stake in AEW at an amount that would be less than 10%, meaning that there was no legal right for either side to divulge this information.
Another source has now made the same claim as CNN’s recent article discussing the political landscape of professional wrestling mentioned this point;
“The embrace of contemporary issues is part of a larger, politically shaded rivalry playing out in the industry, between the 7-year-old AEW and the industry’s ruling juggernaut for generations, WWE (Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent corporation, owns a minority stake in AEW).”
One of the reasons for the emergence of this news comes from the ongoing sale of WBD to Netflix (which airs WWE worldwide), throwing AEW’s future with WBD into question. AEW’s future under WBD and potentially Netflix is unclear in the long-term, though it was believed that no sale would affect their current ongoing TV deal on TBS & TNT.
