WWE picks up speed as we head to the Royal Rumble
Jan 11, 2022
WWE RAW hurtled along towards the Royal Rumble, as several stars confirmed their spots in the men’s match, title matches were confirmed, and titles even changed hands.
In the WWE Title scene, Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar finally met in the ring, but this was all business a both men were out to talk. Whilst Lashley said it’s an honour to finally be able to look Lesnar in the eye, Lesnar said that the only reason they hadn’t until know is because Brock was busy winning titles, and didn’t have a clue who Lashley was until Day 1. The two went back-and-forth on the mic, with Brock making fun of Lashley, until Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander attacked, despite Lashley telling the pair that The hurt Business were never reformed. Brock and Bobby dispatched the former Tag Champions, before Lashley and MVP made their exit.
Over in the Universal Title scene, Seth Rollins said he’s excited for the Rumble, and excited to beat Roman Reigns, like he always does. Big E soon cut Rollins off, saying he’s confirmed for the Rumble, and can’t wait to defeat Rollins for the title at WrestleMania. Rollins laughed off Big E’s chances in a singles bout between the two, leading to E challenging Rollins on the spot to a match.
Rollins and E went back-and-forth with both men getting huge near falls, but eventually it was Rollins’ day, as ‘The Visionary’ eventually got the win with The Stomp, after throwing everything at the former WWE Champion.
There was upheaval in the men’s and women’s tag scenes too, first as RK-Bro lost the Raw Tag Titles to Alpha Academy, and later as Nikki ASH turned on partner Rhea Ripley.
In the case of RK-Bro, the two teams went hammer and tongs, with Gable targeting Riddle’s leg, leaving Orton to face long spells on the apron as Riddle was worked over. Eventually Orton got the hot tag, and ran riot. Riddle wanted the tag back, but Otis decked him, with Alpha Academy combining to put Randy away after ‘The Viper’ missed an RKO, Otis nailing a huge powerslam to land the titles. All Randy had to do was tag Riddle and it could have been ok, after Randy had earlier told ‘The Original Bro’ that they lost their match last week because Riddle didn’t tag in Orton.
ASH and Ripley were set to talk about the Royal Rumble before Nikki changed tact and declared she wanted the Tag Titles back. Ripley tried to talk Nikki down, saying the team had run its course, as ASH took the news badly, saying Ripley thought she was the stronger half of the time. Rhea denied this and tried to placate her friend, with the two hugging it out. But Nikki said ‘almost super heroes don’t need friends’ before beating Ripley down to a chorus of boos.
Beth Phoenix joined husband Edge on ‘The Cutting Edge’ with the two stating they will defeat Miz and Maryse at the Rumble. The Mizanin’s made their way to the ring, with Miz running his mouth off and praising Maryse. However, Maryse was clearly intimidated by Phoenix, and quietly left Miz by himself in the ring as he ranted on.
And in RAW’s Main Event Doudrop overcame Liv Morgan and Bianca Belair to earn an opportunity at Becky Lynch’s title at the Rumble. All three competitors had spells in control, showing what they were capable of as Lynch watched on from the commentary table. Becky was even mildly complimentary of her rivals, as Belair broke up a Doudrop pin with a 450 splash. Belair got momentum behind her, leading Lynch to break up Belair’s pin on Morgan after a KOD. Lynch and Belair then fought at ringside, as Doudrop took advantage of the chaos, crushing Liv with a second rope splash to earn that title opportunity.
Post-match, Becky came in to congratulate Doudrop, but denied a handshake and delivered a slap before going for a Man-handle Slam. However Doudrop fought out and stared Lynch down as the champ retreated up the ramp.
