Fantasy, Logical, Dubious, Wildcard: John Cena’s Opponent At WWE SummerSlam 2021
Who will Cena stand across from at WWE's Biggest Party Of The Summer?
It appears we may soon be getting the return of some famous trumpets.
That’s right, if a recent report is to be believed, John Cena is anticipated to be making a long-awaited return to WWE.
The 16-time WWE and World Heavyweight Champion is expected to be popping up just in time for the promotion’s reassumption of touring and welcoming live crowds to the product, with rumours suggesting that Cena will be involved in a huge main-event match at SummerSlam in August.
Of course, any match involving John Cena is, by definition, a big match, but one can’t help but wonder who WWE’s most mainstream talent will face at ‘The Biggest Party Of The Summer’.
So, let’s have some fun, play another round of ‘fantasy booker’, and consider four names in WWE that Cena could stand across the ring from in the main event of SummerSlam 2021!
Fantasy: Drew McIntyre
Talk about bringing out the big guns early!
Drew McIntyre has been one of wrestling’s biggest stars during the Pandemic Era. The Scotsman, who won the WWE Championship in front of absolutely no fans at WrestleMania 36, has not been afraid to try new things and more than willingly put the promotion on his back during what has undoubtedly been one of the toughest periods ever experienced.
McIntyre has been the face of Monday Night Raw over the last 18 months and a large reason for that has been his undeniable work ethic, both in and out of the ring. The man himself said in a recent interview that he patterns himself on John Cena. He noted Cena’s relentless desire to be better and how he took advantage of every opportunity, and applied it to himself.
The story practically writes itself.
WWE’s longest-ever face of the company, in Cena, against the man who has stepped up to take his place in Drew McIntyre.
Is it the way WWE are going? Maybe not, given McIntyre has reportedly been slated for a summer feud with former 3MB teammate Jinder Mahal. But, to be perfectly frank, I know who I would rather see McIntyre go one-on-one against…
It doesn’t even need to be for the WWE Championship. McIntyre is expected to challenge Bobby Lashley at Hell In A Cell for the title, but the concept of the Scottish Warrior against Cena in a bout built on respect, and perhaps a passing of the torch, is enough to get the match over without any gold.
The two have briefly collided in the past, albeit in a Fatal-Four Way Match, in January 2019. The idea of a hyped singles bout between them is truly main-event worthy.
I can already see the dollar signs in Vince McMahon’s eyes...
