MVP Reveals He Is In Talks With WWE Over A New Long-Term Contract

Back at the Royal Rumble, Montel Vontavious Porter returned to WWE as a surprise entrant in the Men's Royal Rumble match. Reports soon after noted he had signed with the company as a backstage producer and would occasionally appear on-screen. MVP was soon on TV every week, however, and is considered by many to be one of the bright spots of Monday Night Raw in 2020 in his partnership with Bobby Lashley. 

The self-proclaimed United States Champion was a recent guest on Gorilla Position and revealed he and WWE are currently in negotiations over a new long-term deal. Porter also noted he plans to transition more into a managerial role, but wants to continue wrestling for at least two more years. 

"I had every intention of retiring this year," MVP said. "I'm from Miami but I reside in Houston and I have a son in Houston. My son has become a massive wrestling fan and for him, I reached out to WWE about being a surprise entry in the rumble and they welcomed it with open arms. So, it was meant to be a gift for my son and it went so well that I was invited to come to San Antonio the next night for Monday Night Raw, and I was given an opportunity to wrestle Rey Mysterio who is my son's favourite wrestler.

"And then I was offered a job as a producer, which I accepted because I had every intention of retiring anyway, and I was working as a producer and then I was asked to do an on-screen VIP Lounge, and then I was asked to do a short match and then another on-screen segment and another and another and another and before I knew it, my responsibilities as a producer became less and less as I was asked to do more and more as talent. And now, I can say the WWE and myself are in negotiations for a long-term deal."

He later added: "I really see myself moving into a Heyman-esque role as I get older, but I still have a good two to three years of bumping left in this body. I can still go. And I've done just about everything that I wanted to do, and I think maybe winning the tag titles with Lashley, seeing Lashley to a WWE Championship run, those are some of the things I would like to see. For now, for the immediate future, I would like to continue to be involved in the ring and have singles matches and tag matches but, you know, over the next couple of years I imagine I'll be doing less of that and more of just the managerial responsibilities and I'm enjoying that a great deal."
