Report: WWE Plans For Women's Tag Team Title Tournament Up In The Air

No update on the WWE Women's Tag Team Title tournament

How WWE plan to crown new Women's Tag Team Champions is now up in the air.

Sasha Banks and Naomi previously held the gold but they were stripped of the belts after they walked out of the May 16 episode of Monday Night Raw, with WWE later announcing a tournament would be held to crown new champions.

A tournament is yet to get underway, although it was noted WWE had pitched different ideas for the brackets, with one idea being to have Natalya and Shayna Baszler, Tamina and Dana Brooke, Doudrop and Nikki ASH, and Carmella and Queen Zelina involved. NXT being in the tournament was also pitched.

Queen Zelina's involvement seemed highly unlikely, though, since she is currently out of action following surgery and won't be back for at least another six to eight weeks.

In an update on the situation, Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio the brackets for the tournament were pitched but never signed off on and there has been no word about the tournament in recent days.

"That women's tag team tournament is like dead now. Yeah, not a word. They had an idea for four women's teams whatever they end up being. It was pitched but it was never signed off on as of like a week ago. Now, I have no idea what's going on, it's like not a word," Meltzer said.

The company do have the opportunity to crown new champions this weekend if they so desire with WWE set to broadcast the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.
