The final build to New Year's Evil

The final edition of NXT in 2021 very much looked to the future as the episode was dominated by the build-up for next week's New Year's Evil show.

Grayson Waller opened the episode to cut a promo on AJ Styles before the former Matty Wahlberg noted he was supposed to face Dexter Lumis tonight but The Tortured Artist wasn't cleared to compete, so Waller faced Odyssey Jones instead.

Jones tried to put Waller away during the match but the Australian managed to pick up the win after he sent Odyssey crashing into an exposed turnbuckle and followed up with a Rolling Stunner for the 1-2-3.

Waller didn't have long to gloat after the match, though, as AJ Styles appeared on the titantron and announced he would be at New Year's Evil next week.

NXT also teased changing next week's NXT Women's Title Triple Threat after Io Shirai and Kay Lee Ray interrupted Raquel Gonzalez and Cora Jade's backstage interview ahead of their scheduled match against Toxic Attraction's Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne.

Such was the bickering that Mandy Rose appeared and booked a tag team match for later in the show between the WarGames teammates. The winners would challenge for the NXT Women's Title on January 4. Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne were nowhere to be seen.

The tag team match took place in the main event and both teams fought back and forth until Gonzalez decked Kay Lee Ray with a Chingona Bomb and Jade blind-tagged herself into the match. The 20-year-old then went to make the cover but Gonzalez broke up the pin, arguing that it was her cover to make. Jade then threw a forearm at Gonzalez but they ended up working together moments later as the former NXT Women's Champion pushed Cora through an O'Connor Roll from Kay Lee Ray into an O'Connor Roll of her own for the win.

The arguing between Jade and Gonzalez then continued after the match and NXT went off the air following a nonsensical promo from Mandy Rose within which she claimed her challengers at New Year's Evil would fail because they want to win the NXT Women's Championship.

WALTER also appeared on NXT for the first time since TakeOver 36 in a segment between Imperium, MSK and Riddle. After the former NXT Tag Team Champions called out Imperium at Riddle's behest and some arguing took place, The Ring General appeared on the titantron and put over Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner. Riddle then challenged WALTER and Imperium to a six-man tag team match against himself and MSK at New Year's Evil, a challenge WALTER accepted.

Brian Kendrick was also originally scheduled to come out of retirement on December 28 but Harland faced Andre Chase instead and he made quick work of the former Harlem Bravado. Harland and Joe Gacy then kidnapped a student of Andre Chase University after the match and later spared him on a rooftop.

The drama between Xyon Quinn and Legado Del Fantasma continued on December 28 too as the former Rugby league player gave Elektra Lopez an ultimatum to choose between him and Santos Escobar.

This played into Escobar's match against Solo Sikoa later in the night after Quinn made his way to the ringside area and stared at Lopez. Escobar decided to take out Quinn with a dive moments later, but this proved to be the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion's downfall as he walked straight into a Superkick from Sikoa when he rolled back into the ring and the Usos' brother followed up with a Splash for the win. Sikoa's night didn't end on a happy note, though, as he was later attacked by Boa during a backstage interview.

Elsewhere on NXT, The Creed Brothers put Trick Williams through a table after Carmelo Hayes and Roderick Strong signed the contract for their title unification match, Von Wagner defeated Malik Blake before Edris Enofe saved Blade from a post-match attack, and Tiffany Stratton vanquished Fallon Henley in the daddy's girl's in-ring debut.
