Kyle O'Reilly vs. Kushida, Johnny Gargano starts to turn babyface?

Like clockwork, WWE NXT once again produced a night of solid in-ring action that featured an excellent main event between Kyle O'Reilly and Kushida. Multiple matches were also set up for the coming weeks and Diamond Mine finally debuted. Check out what happened below:

NXT opened up with an Adam Cole promo before his scheduled match. The former NXT Champion recalled the events of last week and he refused to pick his opponent to defy Samoa Joe's orders. Cole then proclaimed himself as the greatest NXT Champion of all time and claimed no one could change his mind about wrestling tonight.

Carmelo Hayes' music suddenly played over the titantron, though, and the young upstart parodied John Cena's famous "ruthless aggression" speech, gigantic slap and all.

Adam Cole def. Carmelo Hayes

The slap earned Hayes his wish and an angry Cole faced off against the newish NXT Superstar.

Hayes looked impressive throughout the 12-minute contest and Carmelo was able to survive to the point that Cole grew frustrated. That frustration only continued to brew when Hayes blocked a Panama Sunrise attempt with a Superkick. The former Christian Casanova took too long to capitalise, however, and Cole countered a mid-rope springboard with a Superkick. The former NXT Champion then followed up with Panama Sunrise for the win.

Following the match, a clip of Franky Monet, Jessi Kamea and Aliyah chatting backstage was shown. Robert Stone eventually turned up, but Monet stealing Kamea and Aliyah from under him was teased yet again.

Zoey Stark was then interviewed by McKenzie Mitchell. Stark said Shirai gave her a big break when she debuted in NXT earlier this year and she was just paying her back. Shirai then appeared and said she respects Stark, but doesn't like her.

More talking followed after the break and LA Knight at his mansion cut a promo on Cameron Grimes.

Segment with The Way and Pete Dunne & Oney Lorcan

Johnny Gargano and Austin Theory of The Way headed to the ring for the next segment. Johnny Wrestling stated there is new management in town and therefore it's time for a new NXT Champion. He proceeded to insult Karrion Kross and claim NXT needs him as champion.

Pete Dunne and Oney Lorcan made their way to the ring, though, after Gargano claimed he could outwrestle Kross on Johnny TakeOver's worst day.

The Bruiserweight kept his words short and sweet and he told Gargano he must be mad to think he was the number one contender over him. Dunne then tried to antagonise Austin Theory but Gargano attempted to defuse the situation by claiming The Way are now good, law-abiding citizens of NXT.

The Way then moved to leave the ring, but Theory stupidly left his fingers near Dunne and The Bruiserweight made him pay with a quick snap.

A clip of Cameron Grimes arriving at the Capitol Wrestling Center was then shown. After The Technical Savage handed out some money, Ari Sterling insulted Ted DiBiase which resulted in Grimes knocking him to the floor.

McKenzie Mitchell tried to interview Adam Cole soon after but William Regal came into the picture and claimed there was no animosity between Cole and Samoa Joe. The former Undisputed ERA man laughed this off and he lambasted Regal for not reprimanding Joe. Cole then appeared to leave the building.

The Way resumed their visits to William Regal's office next and Gargano and Theory continued to be model employees. Regal agreed with them that there had to be consequences for Dunne's actions, so the general manager booked Gargano and Theory in a tag team match against The Bruiserweight and Oney Lorcan for later in the show.

Io Shirai & Zoey Stark def. The Robert Stone Brand

Io Shirai and Zoey Stark teamed together against Aliyah and Jessi Kamea in the second match on the show.

Much of the match took place during the commercial break but Io Shirai ran wild during the parts that were broadcast. The Genius Of The Sky then won the match with her Moonsault finisher.

After the bell, Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell, who made their way to ringside while the match was ongoing, were about to enter the ring until Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai interrupted and arrived at the squared circle. A second interruption followed moments later and Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon headed to the ring.

Moon and Blackheart pointed out they won a number one contenders' match ahead of In Your House which Gonzalez and Kai had seemingly forgotten about. This led to a brawl between the three challenger teams and Samoa Joe had to restore order with a security team.

After another break, it was announced Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher would challenge for the NXT Tag Team Championship at The Great American Bash.

The Way def. Pete Dunne & Oney Lorcan

Austin Theory and Johnny Gargano changed into their ring gear in preparation for the next match and The Way worked the 14-minute contest as babyfaces with the old Johnny Wrestling making an appearance at intervals.

Theory's fingers were an easy target for Dunne and Lorcan throughout the match, but this didn't matter during the finish. In the final moments, Gargano managed to take out Pete Dunne with a Tope into a Tornado DDT. He then climbed onto the apron and decked Lorcan with One Final Beat for the victory.

The Way had no time to celebrate, though, as Karrion Kross decimated Gargano with a forearm to the back of the head from out of nowhere. Johnny Wrestling looks to have a date with the NXT Champion on the horizon.

Samoa Joe then met with Karrion Kross backstage and The Samoan Submission Machine allowed him and Scarlett to leave the building. Joe turned around to see Pete Dunne and both men stared at each other again.

A match was then made official for next week's show. Zoey Stark & Io Shirai will take on Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart and Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai in a number one contenders' match for the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship. Why Moon and Blackheart have to earn the right to be number one contenders again is anyone's guess.

Franky Monet def. Elektra Lopez

The encore of Franky Monet's world premiere was the next match on the show.

Elektra Lopez got in some offence in the opening moments but La Wera Loca fought back and picked up the win after a couple of minutes with the Glam Slam.

McKenzie Mitchell continued her busy night and briefly interviewed Bronson Reed. Reed talked about Santos Escobar before Hit Row interrupted and tried to intimidate the NXT North American Champion.

Hit Row def. Ever-Rise

Ahead of the next match, a clip of Ever-Rise trying to spray paint Hit Row's car aired. They were quickly spotted by Top Dolla, though, leading to tonight's match.

Similar to the prior match, Hit Row made quick work of Ever-Rise and Ashante "Thee" Adonis pinned Matt Martel after a Draping Neckbreaker from Top Dolla's shoulders. Martel had a brutal landing, though, so this finisher may not stick around.

McKenzie Mitchell interviewed Mercedes Martinez next and it was revealed Martinez would face Xia Li and Boa in a Mixed Tag Team match next week. Li and Boa then attacked Martinez from behind but Jake Atlas made the save. It didn't take long for Martinez to find her tag team partner.

The charging battery that debuted last week was also up to 51 percent.

Kyle O'Reilly def. Kushida

After all of that, Kyle O'Reilly went one on one with Kushida in a very good main event.

The early action was dominated by grappling and mat wrestling but the pace eventually quickened. Kushida also targeted O'Reilly's arm throughout and he repeatedly tried to apply the Hoverboard Lock before he was finally able to do so.

Kushida only had the submission in briefly, though, before O'Reilly rolled through into a cradle for the 1-2-3.

Both men then thanked each other for the match until Adam Cole tried to attack O'Reilly from behind. Kool Kyle saw him coming, however, and both men brawled back and forth until Samoa Joe's security team guided them out of the CWC.

This left Kushida in the ring alone and he was suddenly jumped by a hooded man. Tyler Rust and Hideki Suzuki then headed to the ring and the hooded man was revealed as Roderick Strong just before The Master Of The Backbreaker decimated Kushida with a knee. Malcolm Bivens then joined them in the ring and Diamond Mine stood tall as NXT went off the air.
