WWE's Drew McIntyre Did Not Intend AEW Shot During Raw Promo

"I don’t like that shot back-and-forth stuff, I don’t see the point. It’s not good for business."

Drew McIntyre says he did not mean to take a shot at All Elite Wrestling during his promo on this past Monday's Raw.

Speaking prior to the main event that put WWE Champion Bobby Lashley against Sheamus, McIntyre cut a promo in which he discussed a guarantee that MVP had made. McIntyre would utter the line: "If you make a guarantee and don’t deliver, fans get upset and sparks fly.”

Wrestling fans quickly made the assumption that McIntyre was making a reference to the botched finale of AEW Revolution, in which the final bomb in the Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley failed to deliver the expected bang.

Despite those connections being made, McIntyre is adamant that what he said was merely a coincidence and had not been written for him by a member of the WWE creative team.

However, the Scotsman could see how people might think it was intended as a joke at AEW's expense.

Speaking to Forbes, McIntyre said: "Everyone seems to think ‘writers are gonna put all this together'. They don’t. Drew McIntyre’s out there, and I’ve got no idea what I’m gonna say and I kind of say how I feel.

"I went out there, I said that, and I [heard] ‘sparks fly’ come out my mouth. I didn’t think twice about it, I just rolled right through it, I said my whole interview and watched the match ringside—which was an awesome match.

"I came back, and somebody came up to me and said ‘I saw what you did there.’ ‘What did I do?’ And then they played it out to me and I went ‘Oh, yeah, that could be taken that way.’

"Maybe subconsciously I made a joke...I don’t like that shot back-and-forth stuff, I don’t see the point. It’s not good for business."
