WWE could be set to lose another top star in the coming weeks with reports suggesting that Adam Cole's contract with the promotion will expire following SummerSlam 2021.

Wrestling Inc is reporting that Cole's deal with WWE actually came to an end following NXT's The Great American Bash last month, at which he defeated Kyle O'Reilly, but the former leader of The Undisputed Era agreed to extend his stay with the promotion for another month.

Building on the initial report, Fightful Select offers more details on Cole's standing in WWE, writing that Cole expressed to the company his willingness to keep working up until SummerSlam - set for Saturday 21 August - before re-evaluating things.

There had been an assumption internally in WWE that Cole's contract was due to expire in December of this year but many top names in the promotion were surprised to learn that the deal initially ran out last month, learning of the situation shortly before the NXT Champion's contract was due to expire.

Sources within WWE have praised Adam Cole for being happy to continue to work with the company up until SummerSlam, rather than just leaving and being free to appear on another wrestling show, but there is also reportedly significant levels of frustration and heat within WWE that such an important contract renegotiation has been allowed to go so close to the wire.

There is no indication as to whether Cole wants to leave WWE or would be interested in listening to other offers. At the very least, he would have the freedom to consider them following SummerSlam in Las Vegas in just over two weeks.
