AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door Buys Estimated To Be Down From Last Year

Estimates indicate AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door buys will be down from previous year

Last year’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door event was a major success, and whilst this year’s show also seemed to go down a storm, the interest in the show looks to be not as high in some metrics, with PPV buys reportedly down from last year, per estimates. Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter gave some insight on the numbers.

“Forbidden Door grew 15.0 percent in television PPV buys from week one to week two, which is normal levels… The second week buys for Forbidden Door were down 8.4 percent of those from Double or Nothing. For television, it was down 11.4 percent from Double or Nothing at the same 11 days out reporting time. But it was up five percent in streaming and five percent growth in streaming is very slightly more than an 11 percent decline in television these days.

“The U.S. number for both shows is going to end up around the same and international will be about the same as well. The show should end up beating Double or Nothing based on buys from Japan. Buys are down 7.6 percent from last year’s Forbidden Door on television, but with more buys coming from streaming and less from television, that’s to be expected, and with buys this week that gap will close more.”

It looks as though the show will post similar numbers to that of last month’s Double or Nothing PPV, which settled at around 140,000. It should also be noted that with NJPW buys, the number could be boosted higher than that for Forbidden Door.
