Athena Reveals Why She Is A Better Fit In AEW Than WWE

Athena has made herself at home in AEW

After defeating Mercedes Martinez for the ROH Women’s World Championship at Final Battle, Athena has capped off 2022 with success, having returned to the indies at the beginning of the year before signing with AEW/ROH in May.

2021 saw Athena - then known as Ember Moon - released by WWE after a six-year stint with the company, and during the post-Final Battle media scrum, Athena revealed why she feels like AEW/ROH is a better fit for her than WWE was:

"When I got to the other place, it wasn't necessarily about the wrestling, it was about the entertainment, which isn't bad," Athena began. "We tried that, it wasn't a fit for me, but I think a big difference here is that, one, I know I'm good in the ring and it's taken a while and I think I've proven myself to TK [Tony Khan] and just showed that I can do both. But mostly for me personally, especially with a Ring of Honor championship, this is a wrestling championship. I am a wrestler."

Athena tasted success in WWE NXT having held both the NXT Women’s Championship and NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships across two stints with the brand, but was never prominently featured on WWE’s main roster.
