Five years on from his final match, Jushin Thunder Liger shockingly came out of retirement at the WrestleCade SuperShow on Saturday, November 29 to answer an open challenge from Joey Janela.
Managed by Sonny Onoo, Liger would ultimately defeat Janela in under two minutes in the legendary wrestler's first match since his retirement at Wrestle Kingdom 14 in January 2020.
Janela told Fightful Select he was originally expecting to face George South at WrestleCade, but he found out at an AML Wrestling show months ago that he would, in fact, be going one-on-one with Liger at the convention.
The finish was unclear the day before the match, and it was noted that New Japan Pro-Wrestling are strict with retirements, but Liger was easy to work with.
A few wrestlers were presented to Liger as options for him to perform at WrestleCade and he ultimately selected Janela.
Jushin Liger is recognised as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He is an 11-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, three-time Best of the Super Juniors winner, six-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, two-time Super J Cup winner, one-time WCW Light Heavyweight Champion, and one-time GHC Junior Heavyweight Champion. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the 2020 class.
