Becky Lynch has pointed out that WWE wanted fans to be unhappy with the nature of her return match at SummerSlam 2021, in order to build a longer storyline with Bianca Belair.

Lynch made her comeback to WWE at SummerSlam in August, having been away for over a year, but defeated Belair for the SmackDown Women's Championship in less than 30 seconds.

While fans were delighted to see Lynch, many were displeased with the nature of the bout, something The Man has noted was the intended emotion WWE wanted from the audience.

Speaking with CBS Sports, when asked about criticisms of her return match at SummerSlam 2021, Lynch said: "Look, the thing is, people are not happy with how it went down. That’s a good thing when we want people to want somebody to overcome something. It’s better in the long run if people are not happy. If they’re happy and they’re happy with the match and she loses, then we have a problem.

"We want people to want the good guy to come out on top. If we see somebody we like do something that’s a bit underhanded, then we are displeased with them and don’t want them to win. That’s what we want."
