Billy Gunn Details Joining AEW

Billy Gunn joined AEW in 2019

Hands up, who had ‘Billy Gunn to be part of one of the hottest acts in wrestling in 2023’ on their bingo card?

Regardless of your thoughts of Gunn’s run as ‘Daddy Ass’ you can’t argue that Gunn is massively over with AEW fans, with the 30 year veteran a featured part of AEW programming.

The WWE Hall of Famer has been with AEW since their formation in early 2019, and Gunn revealed on the AEW Unrestricted podcast how he joined the promotion:

“Cody [Rhodes] called me,” Billy Gunn revealed. “Like they called me and said, ‘Hey, we have to have you,’ because I had been fired the fourth time from another place. [laughs] But no, I left over there and was out on the Indies; I was just having fun. For some reason, people still wanted to book me all the time. So I was super busy.

“But they were in the process of doing this; all the main characters were set now with the main characters. We need people around us, and me and Cody have always had a great relationship. They reached out and said, ‘Hey, would you love to be a part of this?’ I went, ‘Where do I sign?'”

As well as managing The Acclaimed, Gunn primarily works as a backstage coach in AEW, and wrestles from time-to-time.
