Bret Hart has revealed that he made a conscious effort to 'pass the torch' to Steve Austin during their classic WWE WrestleMania 13 Submission Match, in part to prevent Shawn Michaels and Triple H from stealing Austin's spotlight.
Reflecting on the match during an interview with Studio 1 Sports, The Hitman said:
"With Steve, I just wanted to deliver a really good story for him because I wanted him to be the guy, and I knew he was gonna be the guy and he deserved to be the guy and I wasn’t gonna let Shawn and Triple H steal that position from him. I wanted to pass the torch to Steve."
A year after losing to Bret via referee stoppage, Austin would defeat Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV to win the WWE Title for the first time.
Widely regarded as one of the best matches in WWE history, Austin versus Hart was the first match inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as an 'Immortal Moment', making Bret the first three-time WWE Hall of Famer.
The Texas Rattlesnake has previously praised Hart for 'making' him at WrestleMania 13.
