Buddy Matthews To Debut For NJPW In November

The former Murphy has a new lease on life

Buddy Matthews, the man formerly known as Buddy Murphy in WWE, will debut for New Japan at the promotion's Battle in the Valley event in San Jose on Saturday, November 13.

NJPW made the announcement via promo video during Saturday's NJPW Strong tapings in Philadelphia. NJPW also tweeted, "They say as one door closes, another opens... Maybe it was staring at me the entire time. Buddy Matthews is coming."

Matthews' opponent for the event has not yet been announced. Other names booked for the San Jose card include Jay White, Will Ospreay, Tomohiro Ishii, and Juice Robinson.

Matthews was released from WWE on June 2, as part of a spate of cuts that included Braun Strowman, Malakai Black, and Ruby Soho.

During his eight year tenure with WWE, Matthews held the NXT Tag Team titles with Wesley Blake, as well as the Raw Tag Team titles with Seth Rollins. Matthews also reigned as Cruiserweight champion for six months from October 2018 to April 2019.

Matthews has wrestled two matches since his WWE release, working two indie events in Pennsylvania last month.
