Drew McIntyre Was 'Very, Very Upset' Over WWE Clash At The Castle Loss

The ingredients for a magical moment were there at Clash at the Castle 2022 as Drew McIntyre challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship inside Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. McIntyre even looked like winning and receiving his own Bulldog-SummerSlam 1992 moment after he caught Reigns with a Claymore, only for Solo Sikoa to make his main roster debut and cost McIntyre the match. 

Instead of McIntyre celebrating a title win at the end, fans had to accept the infamous conciliation prize of Drew and Tyson Fury singing 'American Pie' and 'Don't Look Back in Anger.'  

McIntyre has noted since the loss that he found Clash at the Castle "bittersweet" and Irn Dru has gone one step further in a chat with Gorilla Position, admitting he was "very, very upset" by the loss in Cardiff. 

"I was very very upset, I was frustrated. I understand the bigger picture with Roman and where the company's going, where he's going, how necessary it is. Personally believed there was maybe another way to figure out how we can protect what's going on with him, but also elevate McIntyre to where we need him to be for the company. We didn't do it that night, and I thought we could have, maybe should have," McIntyre stated.

"[Triple H] always talks about the bigger picture, the long game. If I'd won that night, the story wouldn't be the same obviously as it is right now. It's interesting. As frustrated as you might be at the time, if you take the time and you go through the emotions, and you have those emotions stored in mind when you get presented with an opportunity of we can tell this really interesting story now, that is such an important part of it. If it went the way I felt like it should have on the night, we wouldn't be where we are right now. So wrestling's a funny old thing. The good thing is it's 52 weeks a year. You're only as good as your last match, your latest storyline."

While he didn't win at Clash at the Castle, McIntyre will have the opportunity to become a world champion again at WrestleMania 40 when he challenges Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship on April 7 (night two). McIntyre's long-term WWE future remains up in the air, though, and he recently declined to reveal his contract status.
