Eugene Claims He Was Originally Scheduled To Win The WWE World Heavyweight Title In 2004 Before Plans Changed
WWE apparently almost booked Eugene to win the belt in the Summer of 2004

Wrestling star Nick Dinsmore - known in 2000s WWE as Eugene - claims he was set to briefly become World Heavyweight Champion in 2004, only for plans to change.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Dinsmore explains:
"So the week prior, the creative team came to me and told me Eugene was supposed to win the world title against Chris Benoit. Triple H was going to do something and it would backfire, then Eugene accidentally wins. Eugene was gonna hold the world title for one week and then I was gonna wrestle Triple H in Washington, DC.
"And then Triple H was going to beat Eugene – or manipulate him out of the title somehow – and then Triple H was going to go on to SummerSlam and wrestle Benoit and Randy Orton in a triple threat match, thinking that Randy Orton would help him defeat Chris Benoit, and that’s when Randy was gonna win the world title against Triple H, which would then cause Triple H to turn on Randy.
"I also know the card is ‘subject to change’. So, I kept that under my vest, I really didn’t tell anybody because I sure as hell didn’t want to tell anybody and then plans change, which is what happened".
Eugene did indeed challenge Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Title on the July 12, 2004 edition of Monday Night Raw but he was unsuccessful and then beaten down by Evolution post-match. WWE aired Raw from Washington, DC on July 19, 2004.
Eugene's gimmick attracted criticism for its portrayal of a person with learning difficulties. Dinsmore has defended the character, and has previously given his view as to why it was a success in WWE at the time.
