WrestleMania weekend is always a notable one not just for WWE, but for various promotions around the world and for those on the independent wrestling scene. It was perhaps the most important weekend of an entire career for Fuego Del Sol.
At GCW’s Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 emanating from the Pearl Theatre at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, former AEW wrestler Fuego Del Sol lost to Atticus Cogar in a Mask vs. Career match. Following his defeat, Fuego Del Sol unmasked, showcasing his face to the world. His mask wasn’t the only thing left behind, as Fuego also placed his boots in the middle of the ring, signalling his retirement. This was soon followed up by a post on social media that further suggested that he was ending his career.
“11 Years…Ups. Downs. Everything in between. I’ve been selfish and doing this for me. Now it’s time to focus on my family and feeding them. I left everything I had left in the ring…including my boots. From the bottom of my heart… Thank you all for everything. Fuego is Done.”
Fuego Del Sol is just 29 years of age, so this is certainly an instance of “never say never”. His retirement could also simply be for the Fuego gimmick, if he indeed continues to compete without a mask. This remains to be seen, but if this the end of Fuego, we wish him the best in his retirement.
