Goldberg is back in WWE for one last hurrah, with the WCW legend set to challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship in what is set to be his retirement match.

The multi-time world champion has long been talking of his official retirement, with ‘Da Man’ at one time looking to run an event in Israel to celebrate his bow-out. Instead, Goldberg is back in WWE, with the company billing this run as his ‘final ride’.

Speaking on The National Football Show with Dan Sileo, Goldberg shed some more light on this final hurrah:

“There’s a lot of reasons why I’m doing it. If push came to shove, I wouldn’t have planned it at 58 years old, but that’s just the way things go,” Goldberg said. “Unfortunately, my last match with the WWE contractually, it was against Roman Reigns, it was in Saudi Arabia, there were a number of things that were wrong with that scenario. First and foremost, me coming off of COVID three weeks before. You know, I hadn’t trained for three months, I had COVID. So to make an extremely long story short, it just wasn’t the right way for me to go out. That’s all.”

Continuing, Goldberg paid respect to Gunther, saying the following about ‘Der Ring General’:

“He’s a formidable opponent. I mean, he’s the World Heavyweight Champion. I remember meeting him years ago right when he broke in. The guy had a shooting star up his ass at that point, and I knew he was going to be destined for big things,” Goldberg said. “And, hey, it’s an honour for me to get in the ring with him. It’s an honour to step into a position to be vying for the World Heavyweight Championship at 58 years old. I mean, I don’t know of any other ones who have retired with a match like that.”

The two are set to clash at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12.
