Gunther Breaks The Honky Tonk Man's Record, Becomes Longest-Reigning Intercontinental Champion In WWE History

Gunther has done it!

There is finally someone cooler, cockier, and more bad than the Honky Tonk Man and his name is Gunther.

Gunther officially passed the Honky Tonk Man's record today and Der Ring General is officially the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history, having held the gold for 455 days.

Gunther's reign began all the way back on June 10, 2022 when he defeated Ricochet to capture WWE's workhorse championship. Gunther has defended the title on 15 occasions since then, picking up wins against the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, Shinsuke Nakamura, Rey Mysterio, Riddick Moss, Xavier Woods, Mustafa Ali, Braun Strowman, Matt Riddle, and Chad Gable. He has also defeated Ricochet two more times since taking the title from him.

Gunther punched his ticket to breaking the record after he picked up a win over Chad Gable on the September 4 edition of Monday Night Raw to end their trilogy.

The Honky Tonk Man previously held the Intercontinental Title for 454 days. He defeated Ricky Steamboat for the strap on June 2, 1987 and he would remain the champion until SummerSlam 1988 on 29 August when he would drop the title to the increasingly popular Ultimate Warrior.
